South by Southeast embodies all of Rodney's characteristic painterly attributes: the high view-point; areas or patches of colour that lead your eye over and across the painting; the textured hessian; figures in the landscape all creating the feeling of a set scene.
The high view-point of familiar landscapes gives a feeling of flying above the land, or being perched at the top of a hill. The land itself is divided into areas of colour, hills are soft, clouds are gentle, water moves slowly. A story is created.
