Doug Hart: Port Folio

6-24 December 2025

I have always loved the area known firstly by Māori as Potakere or Poutakere, since renamed by Victorian colonists as Port Chalmers.

The arrival of Scottish settlers on the Philip Laing and John Wickliffe in 1848 was historically important in establishing the Otago Province and the settlement of Dunedin.

These paintings portray some historical buildings and scenes of Port Chalmers, set in the stunning Otago harbour. Can you recognise the buildings stacked together (thankfully preserved) and Back Beach walk? The game board, Portopoly, and the imagined island of Port are drawn for you to ponder and explore. The artworks are meant to be fun to look at but detailed enough to revisit them time and time again to identify more features.

I hope that you find my style of artwork interesting and enjoyable and it offers you a different viewpoint of the harbour community of Port Chalmers.
